Skating To Where The Puck Will Be
Dr. Dave Fleming, Chief Strategic Officer, Southwest Florida Community Foundation
The great hockey player Wayne Gretzky was once asked why he was able to score so many goals. His now famous answer was, "I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been." Gretzky knew that once a puck arrived in a particular location, it was already too late to make something happen. In order to be successful, he had to anticipate the future before it happened.
Gretzky's goal-making wisdom is equally valuable in life. Our future success is somewhat dependent on our present preparation. Preparing for the future is also the goal of The Southwest Florida Community Foundation's current regional call to action: FutureMakers. The focus of FutureMakers is to help the graduating class of 2014 choose their next educational step with greater velocity.
The Foundation has a tremendous team of regional partners. The partners share common regional FutureMakers goals but design unique programs suited for their respective counties.
Our partners are:
- The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools(Lee County)
- Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast (Charlotte County)
- Southwest Florida Works (Hendry & Glades)
- Champions for Learning (Collier)
- MassiveU, a mobile-first learning solutions company, is developing the Grad App that allows students to explore next educational steps on their phone or computer.
The regional partners have been hard at work over the last few months getting ready for the FutureMakers launch. They've strategized the most effective ways to connect with graduating seniors in their counties. They've shared their ideas with each other and their wisdom with the Foundation. Their willingness to lend their expertise and energy to this endeavor has already shaped the success of the days ahead. The leaders and board of the Foundation are grateful for their passion and their tireless work on behalf of students in our region.
So what's next? School starts very soon! With it, will come a group of committed mentors in each county. These mentors will explore next steps with graduating seniors and help them fill out financial aid documents. There will be FutureMakers events and conversations happening all over the region. Students will explore their future through virtual technology and the human touch. We are on our way. If you're interested in participating in this important endeavor, don't hesitate to call us at the Foundation or you can call any of our strategic partners.
